the story behind the photos
old stores
'the burnt corn mall'

Step back in time as you enter the town of Burnt Corn, AL (population 'about
300'), where many of the homes and all the stores were built between the late
1800's and the 1930's.

The old stores and shops (7 in all) are leased to the general store keeper, Ray
Welch.  The properties are held as part of the J. F. B. Lowrey Trust as part of the
estate of  Jake Lowrey, who bought the town buildings many years ago.

Having been given permission to photograph and look around at the old stores
and shops clustered together in a small huddle on a thin country highway, I
spent some time exploring the buildings.  Peering inside the windows, I
discovered that many of the buildings, including the old dentist's shop, are
serving as warehouses, with one filled with new tires, another with farm
supplies, etc.

After finishing my shoot, I went back to the general store to talk with Mr. Welch.  I
asked him about the other buildings.  That is when he explained to me how he
leases all 7 buildings from the Lowrey Trust.  The goods warehoused in all the
old buildings are part of his stock.

I remarked, "So, you have, like, the Burnt Corn Wal-Mart then, don't you?'

Mr. Welch grinned sheepishly and replied in a dry drawl,  "We call it the Burnt
Corn Mall."
